Brazil's top World Cup official has denied claims that Sao Paulo risks being struck off next year's tournament schedule following the Itaquerao stadium tragedy.

Two workers were killed Wednesday when a crane fell on top of a metal structure causing a section of the stadium's facade to collapse.

Brazil's 2014 World Cup organizing committee chief executive Ricardo Trade moved to dispel fears Brazil's public prosecutors' office could indefinitely halt work on the stadium.

""One thing has nothing to do with the other,"" Trade said. ""It's impossible to make any type of prediction that the accident is going to cause any type of delay.

""But we cannot go thinking that if the stadium is delayed by three months it is going to be out of the World Cup.""

The 70,000 seat venue is scheduled to host six World Cup matches, including the tournament opener on June 12.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter earlier said he was ""deeply saddened"" by the incident while secretary general Jerome Valcke expressed ""shock"" at the tragedy.

Valcke has repeatedly made clear that FIFA's December deadline for the completion of stadium construction work is not negotiable.

Earlier in the year he warned stadiums that missed the cut-off would be removed from the World Cup schedule.

Itaquerao is not the only stadium struggling to meet FIFA's deadline.

Officials in the western city of Cuiaba admit that Arena Pantanal is unlikely to be ready until at least mid-January while concern also surrounds Arena Amazonia in Manaus and Arena da Baixada in Curitiba.

The World Cup will be held in 12 Brazilian cities from June 12 to July 13.
