SYDNEY, May 3 (Xinhua) -- Australia's Top 100 Restaurants were revealed in the Australian Financial Review on Tuesday, which named Melbourne restaurant Attica as the nation's best.
Victorian restaurant Brae took out second place, while Sydney restaurant Sepia was named as Australia's third best restaurant.
Australia's top chefs gathered in Sydney on Monday evening, to attend the ceremony at The Star.
Editor-in-chief of The Australian Financial Review Michael Stuchbury said the awards help put Australia's food scene on the world map.
"The Australian Financial Review Top 100 awards have reverberated not just around Australia but around the world because it puts them (the restaurants) on the map for all the world coming to Australia wanting to have fine dining, the best Australia can produce," Stuchbury noted.
Political commentator and host of the awards Annabel Crabb told Xinhua that the Australian food industry was hugely important in bringing Chinese tourists to the country.
"Australia is massively well known and justifiably so for our fresh produce and the incredibly culinary range that we have here, not just in Sydney but all around Australia," Crabb said.
She said one of the interesting things particularly as far as Asian cuisines goes is that Australia has an incredible range of Asian cuisines.
Australian celebrity chef Kylie Kwong said Chinese tourists are attracted to Australia's dining scene because of the country's fresh produce.
"Having been to China many times myself I think one of the greatest draw cards would be the quality of the fresh produce," Kwong said.
"Being Chinese myself I imagine being a mainland Chinese person and coming to Sydney Fish Market for example would be an amazing experience and opportunity, all that variety and so fresh!"
CANBERRA, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- The Australian government will attempt to apply "world-first" biometric technology which would allow international travelers to seamlessly exit an airport -- with no need to show a passport or incoming passenger card, local media reported on Monday.
In a project set to kick off later this year, the government is hoping to source technology which would use biometric data and eliminate the need for human involvement in the immigration process.
Currently, the technology allow Australian citizens -- and a limited number of those with international passports -- to avoid the queues at the immigration desk but still require the traveler to scan a passport to enter the country.
John Coyne from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute told Fairfax Media the potential technology would allow international passengers to "literally just walk out like at a domestic airport", adding that it might be a "world first" if implemented in a timely manner.
A spokesperson from the Department of Immigration and Border Protection has said while the government has a vision for the project, called Seamless Traveller, it has announced that it is taking tenders for the technology.
"The department is asking tenderers to provide innovative solutions to allow arriving travelers to self-process," a department spokesperson told Fairfax Media.
