MOGADISHU http://www.authenticsteelersstore.com/S … ft-Jersey/ , Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- The UN World Health Organization (WHO) Sunday said it had not recorded any case of polio disease in Somalia in the last three years, declaring the country polio free.
The WHO said the country recorded the last case of polio in 2014 in the central part of the country but has since then remained free of the paralyzing disease.
The UN health agency however warned Somalia remained vulnerable, calling for continued vaccination campaign.
The head of the WHO Eastern Mediterranean which covers Somalia Dr. Mohamed Fiqi said in Mogadishu that massive vaccination campaigns and commitment from government and international actors had ensured the polio virus did not recur in the Horn of Africa country.
"Today we celebrate a major milestone, however we must remember our work is not yet finished. As the world edges closer to eradicating polio, keeping alert in countries that have high risk of polio importation like Somalia is more of priority than ever," Fiqi said.
"As we move forward, the polio programme in Somalia needs to continue to work to maintain and improve the level of population immunity against polio through target vaccination campaign and strengthening of the routine immunization services and infrastructure," Fiqi added.
The declaration by WHO keeps Somalia outside the last group of countries which still record cases of polio in the world.
Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan are the remaining countries where polio is still being recorded. The WHO chief warned Somalia remains at risk of importation of the virus from these countries.
Somalia President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo praised efforts to rid his country of the polio disease which he noted had subjected many children into suffering.
"No cases were found for the past three years and no child was affected by this disease. Many of our children have suffered from polio for many years.
"To eradicate polio was a big success and it was collective effort and commitment by many young men and women who sacrificed their lives," President Farmaajo observed.
The three year polio-free celebration comes amidst the worst outbreak of measles the country has seen in years.
Somalia is also still responding to an outbreak of acute watery diarrhoeacholera, which began in January 2017. Polio systems and networks are being used in both interventions.
"Polio infrastructure has been critical in responding to these other serious outbreaks," said Fikri.

PARIS, Dec. 3 (Xinhua) -- Faouzi Lamdouni, one of French President Francois Hollande's advisors resigned on Wednesday over accusations of "misuse of company funds" and "tax fraud" in two companies he was connected with, the presidency office said.
Lamdouni, Hollande's advisor at the Elysee on equality and diversity "presented his resignation to have the means to defend himself after appearing before a judge on charges related to acts dating in 2007 and 2008."
The resignation of his close ally won't be a good music to the ears of the Socialist head of state, already weakened by a series of scandals involving his ministers and advisors.
A few days ago, junior minister for veterans Kader Arif announced his resignation over a corruption probe accusing him to favor relatives to enjoy public contracts.
In September, just nine days after he was handed trade portfolio, Thomas Thevenoud was forced to step down, after reports revealed he had not paid income taxes for three years.
Earlier this year, Hollande's chief communications adviser Aquilino Morelle, resigned over charges of conflict of interest linked to his work for pharmaceutical firms.
The last name in the list is budget minister Jerome Cahuzac who was forced to quit the executive staff in March 2013 over alleged financial wrongdoings.
QIONGZHOU, China, Oct. 24 (Xinhua) -- Frenchman Benjamin Giraud of Team Marseille 13 KTM was lucky to grab his first victory at the fifth stage of 2015 Tour of Hainan while Italian Sacha Modolo from Team Lampre Merida still keeps the yellow jersey after Saturday's race.
The fifth stage stretched from Chengmai to Qiongzhong, covering a total distance of 191.9 kilometers with three intermediate sprints.
Giraud, who luckily escaped from a crash that brought down dozens of racers near the finish line, won the photo finish of the fifth stage timing 4:33:04. Modolo came in third to retain the yellow jersey after the race.
The green jersey, representing the best sprinter, also belongs to Modolo by now.
Ma Guangtong from Hengxiang Cycling Team defeated his teammate Wang Meiyin to put on the blue jersey hat representing best Asian rider in the race today.
"There was a crash at 800 meters to go, and after that crash I did not have much strength left for the final sprint," said Modolo.
"Yesterday I felt very good but began my start too late, and today it was judged perfect. I was very happy to win the stage against Modolo," Giraud told reporters after the race.
This year's Tour of Hainan will last nine days with the next stage scheduled for Sunday.
