During the opening event of "Elias Figueroa" stadium, Pinera said, "it will be useful for all the people from Valparaiso, and it will be used by athletes and soccer players. We will have other shows as well and it will host the professional soccer team Santiago Wanderers."
Pinera also said that during his government, which began in March 2010 and will end on March 11, 160 smaller stadiums and 30 sport centers were built "to practice basketball, volleyball, rhythmic gymnastics and dancing, among others, because we want everybody to practice sports."
He recalled that Chile will host the 2014 South American Games from March 7-18 in Santiago. This is the most important sports event in the South American country after the 1962 FIFA World Cup.
